General Information about the Gavdos Municipal Unit The Gavdos community includes the Gavdos island Municipal Unit part and that of Gavdopoula. Gavdos is the lower part of Europe. It has an expanse of just 37 square kilometres. It offers a remarkable biota and for that reason it is protected by the Natura 2000 program. It offers spotless beaches, rooms to let and many tavernas. It is the suitable destination for a quiet vacation away from the cosmopolitan life of the widely known tourist destinations. The most widely known tourist areas of Gavdos are Karaves, Sarakiniko and the beach of Agios Georgios. You can get to Gavdos by a small boat from Palaiochora or Sfakia.
