General Information about the Georgioupolis Municipal Unit
The Municipal Unit of Georgioupolis consists of the municipal parts of Georgioupoli, Kalamitsi, Amygdalio, Kastelos, Kournas and Fylaki. It is located in the north-eastern shore of the island and constitutes one of the most popular tourist destinations. It combines mountains, plains, rivers, lakes, sea, wildlife and cultivable land. The traditional cretan element is strong as well as the cosmopolitan atmosphere with its night life. The beach of Georgioupolis and Kournas, 6 kilometres in length, constitutes an attraction of thousands of visitors. In the village of Kournas the lake of Kournas is located which is the only natural lake in an island of the Mediterranean and also the southern lake in the European Continent. You can also admire the old Byzantine churches of Agios Georgios and Agia Irini as well as the cave of the village with the rare archaeological elements. In the village Mathes, the gothic church of Agios Antonios is very impressive, on the roof of which there is a carob which is considered a holy tree. Kalamitsi Amigdalou is an agricultural village in which you can see old spring and the church of Agios Pavlos built 200 years ago. Also here is located a Silk Association with remarkable products. The maritime settlement of Kavros has a large tourist development. In Filaki you can visit a post-minoan grave, the prison block and the court house preserved from the Venetian era. Finally, in the Georgiopoli county there is the unique forest arias, a very old biotope.
