General Information about the Nea Kydonia Municipal Unit
The Municipal Unit of Nea Kydonia is located west of the city of Chania and consists of the communities of Daratsos, Galatas, Stalos and Agia Marina. The main characteristics of this municipal unit are its big, clean, sandy and green beaches. The beach of Stalos, of Agia Marina and mostly of Agii Apostoli are some of the most popular. The well-known yearly, five-day festival of Agioi Apostoli includes cultural, athletic and ecological events. Galatas is known for its history since it is the field of many battles fought against the Turks and the Germans. The Battle Monument of Crete which is located in this village is erected to honor those who died in the Heroic Battle of Crete. At Alikianos you can visit the church of Ai Kyr Yiannis, in Meskla the fountains and the Byzantine church of Christ. Across the beach of Agia Marina lies the island Thodorou which you can get to by boat. In Thodorou you can see the fort ruins, the church of Agios Theodoros and the natural habitat of the Cretan wild goat. The city of Chania lists hundreds of years of history and has not lost its former glory, and has saved entire Venetian, Turkish and Jewish neighborhoods with well-preserved buildings.
There is daily communication from Chania to Athens from the airport in Akrotiri Chania, 15 km east of the city, and a sea connection with Piraeus through the port of Souda. There are cinemas, multiplex, and open air as well. Many theatrical shows and concerts, exhibitions, artistic events are presented during the whole summer.
