General Information about the Souda Municipal Unit
The Municipal Unit of Souda consists of the communities of Souda, Kalami, Tsikalaria and Megala Chorafia. It is worth to visit the Souda harbor which constitutes the biggest natural port in the mediterranean, the salvaged Turkish settlement of Kato Souda with its very popular fish-taverns and the Venetian castle in Souda South of Souda and in a rather high altitude lies the village Malaksa which took it's name from the mountain of Malaksa. Apart from nature and the good food, you can enjoy from Malaksa the undescribable view of Souda bay and the city of Chania. On the foothills of the mountain lies the village Tsikalaria, picturesque and authentic with the turkish mosque overlooking its town square. Finally you must definately visit Aptera, one of the most important ancient towns of western Crete.

The city of Chania lists hundreds of years of history and has not lost its former glory, and has saved entire Venetian, Turkish and Jewish neighborhoods with well-preserved buildings.
There is daily communication from Chania to Athens from the airport in Akrotiri Chania, 15 km east of the city, and a sea connection with Piraeus through the port of Souda.
