General Information about the Sfakia Municipal Unit The Municipal Unit of Sfakia includes the communities of Agia Roumeli, Agios Ioannis, Anopoli, Askyfou, Asfendou, Imbrou, Patsianou, Skalotis and Chora Sfakion. It is a virtually mountaineous place with the exception of the area of Krapis where the ancient settlement of the same name is salvaged. Chora Sfakion and the area have touristical growth, from there you can visit neighboring beaches and near the sea villages by boat. Western of Chora Sfakion is Fragokastelo which was built in 1340 by Venetians. Fragokastelo attracts a great number of visitors since it is related with the legend of Drosoulites, which are the shadows of the dead horsemen killed there. This legend while confirmed by some of the older men it has also been questioned by many. Anopoli is also remarkably developed touristically while in the area of Agios Ioannis you can visit the very well-known bridge of Aradena. Agia Roumeli lies just on the exit of the Samaria gorge and it is a very touristic location. It offers a crystal-clear sea and clean beach as well as many hotels and rooms to let. You can get to Agia Roumeli by boat from Chora Sfakion or by passing through the Samaria Gorge. You can enjoy your bath in the popular beaches of Agios Paulos in the east and Fournotis in the west.The gorges of Tripiti, Domaton and Elygias attract many visitors who also visit the ancient town of Tarra. In the village Imbros, whichi lies in a small plateau, the gorge of the same name is very popular and has a remarkable biota. This is considered to be one of the deepest gorges. In the Askyfou area you can visit the mall in the Amoudari neighborhood, the Chatzidakis museum with weapons from every era, the neighborhood Akones with remnants of many German constructions as well as the church of Agios Manolis. The Tavri plateau is rather interesting from a natural point of view and in the resort of the same name there you can enjoy a quiet and relaxing stay. West from Chora Sfakion lies the beach village Loutro. You can get there by boat from Sfakia or by walking through rough footpaths. It is rather developed touristically with many hotels, rooms to let, restaurants and cofee shops. On the limits of the municipality of Sfakia and Rethymno lies the Kourtaliotiko gorge which passes through two enormous mountains that almost meet. From Sfakia you can visit by boat Finikas, Sougia, Plakias and the southern end of Europe, the island of Gavdos. Sfakia is very well-known for the local traditional recipies, like the Sfakian honey-pies, Syglina, Stamnagathi and the local rusks. The dairy-farming and meat products are also of a superior quality. Finally it is worth to mention the citizens of Sfakia who are known for their hospitality as well as their proud character, shaped from the old years and combined with the roughness and wilderness of the remarkable natural view.
