General Information of the Municipal Unit of Pelekanou

The Municipal Unit of Pelekanos is located at the southwestern end of N. Chania. It came from the unification of the communities of Paleochora, Sarakina, Vouta, Sklavopoula and Vothiana. The population is: 4259 and the area: 166618 acres. Paleochora is built on a small peninsula between two wonderful beaches. The inhabitants are engaged in tourism but also the cultivation of early vegetables in the area of ​​Kountoura, as well as the cultivation of olives and livestock in general in the Municipal Unit of Pelekanos. In Paleochora one can enjoy the sunset, through the loopholes of the Venetian castle Castel Selino (the Fortress as it is called today), built there in the 13th century, by Duke Marinos Gradenigos. Other attractions of the area are many historical and archeological monuments, and many churches that are remnants of the Byzantine heritage. Paleochora communicates by boat with Sfakia, Gavdos, Ag. Roumeli, Sougia, Elafonisi and other destinations. Ai-Giorgis in Anydros, Ag. Marina in Platanias, Agios Ioannis in Kalamos, the ruins of ancient Yrtakina, Vienna, Kalamidi, Lissos and ancient Pelki from which the Municipal Unit of Pelekanos took its name are some of the attractions you can admire. It is worth visiting the Museum of the Acrites of Europe, as well as to admire the beautiful natural routes to the gorge of Anidra and the path E4 to Kedrodasos and Sougia. For lovers of the wet element, there are very beautiful and clean beaches, as well as sea routes with boats to cross the Libyan Sea.

MUSEUM AKRITON OF EUROPE

The Museum of the Acrites of Europe is housed in the center of Paleochora of the Municipal Unit of Pelekanos in the Prefecture of Chania, in the building of the old boarding school. It was founded in 2006 with funding from the “Culture 2000” Program. The Museum of the Acrites of Europe is the result of many years of preparation of the Research Center of Greek Folklore of the Academy of Athens. This is the product of conferences and scientific discussions in the framework of the European program “Culture 2000”, “European Acritic Heritage”, Greece, France, Spain, Bulgaria, which depicts a trans-European and perhaps universal cultural and historical phenomenon focusing on the ambiguity of the term “acrites ». Defenders of the borders of the “extremes”, the legendary guardians – heroes of Europe, have common characteristics. A Museum unique in the world, which with its exhibits and supervisory material proves the common cultural heritage of the peoples of Europe. Ethnographic and Historical was used as a link between different nationalities or religions of peoples. The scenario of the permanent exhibition mainly highlights the fact that apart from the cross-border conflicts and conflicts, the confrontations of the armies and the various political, economic and national interests, there are also the bridges of society and communication. Its content is complex and varied, oral, audio, audiovisual, written, virtual and from different times and places. The scientific curator of the Museum is the Research Center of Greek Folklore of the Academy of Athens. The main purpose of the Museum is both the dissemination of the common European culture with the Byzantine origins, as well as the animation of the remote area that hosts it. Also to highlight through the exhibits how fruitful and creative can be the interactions from the intersections of peoples, mentalities, attitudes and social patterns. The goal is to create an important pole of attraction for research, study, entertainment and social awareness. Educational programs for schools take place throughout the year, by appointment.
