Olive tree of Vouves: The oldest in the world
In the village of Vouves, Kissamos, the famous olive tree of Vouves proudly dominates. It has a perimeter of 12.5 meters, its height reaches 3 meters while its age exceeds 3,000 years.
This olive tree has signed an immortality contract as it remains fruitful even though its trunk is hollow. Olive wood is age-old and has the property of renewing the heartwood. This phenomenon in the olive of Vouves takes place from the outside to the inside.
In 1990 the tree was declared a Monument of Nature and for this reason a stone wall has been built around it. It is also considered a world monument of nature and rightly so is a miracle of Cretan nature causing awe and admiration with what you see.
