General Information of the Municipal Unit of Voukolies

The Municipal unit of Voukolies includes the former Communities of Anoskeli, Voukolies, Kakopetro, Neriana, Nio Chorio, Palea Roumata, Polemarchi, Tavroniti and Chrysavgi. Geographically it occupies the eastern end of the former province of Kissamos and extends along the valley of the river Tavronitis. In the thirty-four settlements of the twelve villages of the Municipal unit live about 3,500 people, who are mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry.

Eighteen kilometers west of the city of Chania is the entrance of the Municipality with the historic metal bridge of Tavronitis that leads to the elegant village of the same name. The river Tavronitis flows into a wonderful tree-lined beach, where a natural wetland has been formed. Bypassing west the provincial riparian road to Voukolies, in hilly hills, we meet Polemarchi, with the beautiful forest “Limni”, the beautiful settlement of Kallithea, Chrysaugi with the picturesque settlements and the traditional Gavalomouri with its archaic areas. Moving on the provincial road to the east, at the junction of Cyril, are Neriana with the famous bell tower of the church of Agios Ioannis and Nio Chorio, from where the majesty of the Tavronitian river can be seen. Voukolies, administrative and financial center of the Municipality, with important history and tradition are located at the foot of the growing southern mountain range. Worth noting are the Byzantine church of Agios Konstantinos and the historic tower of Voukolia as well as the offered tour routes. Passing through the settlements of Kato Kefala, with the Byzantine churches of Agios Fotios and Agios Andreas and Pano Kefala, with the small waterfalls, we reach east of Sempronas and west of Palea Roumata. Continuing the journey from the provincial road we reach the mountain mass of Kakopetro, where in the small square is the monument of fallen resistance fighters of the Second World War. Moving east we reach Mesavlia. From there begins one of the most beautiful gorges of Crete. East of Kakopetro is the village of Palea Roumata. Surrounded by mountains, it is a center for the creation and preservation of a rich culture, while it is the end but also the starting point of most of the nature-loving routes of the Municipality. The small gorge in the neighborhood of Lidiana, the “hidden school” in the church of Agios Georgios in Hamalevri, the Byzantine churches of Agios Vassilios and the Holy Cross in Vanouledos and the Assumption of the Virgin in Perachori but also the famous church of Agios Located on the border of three provinces, they are still some of the many attractions in the area. In the area of ​​Archontiko you will visit the Venetian villa Renieri and the public library, which houses a considerable number of books. In the village of Gavalomouri, are the ancients of the Geometric period and the monastery of the Holy Trinity.
