General Information of the Innachorion Municipality

The Municipal Unit of Innachorion is located in the southwestern part of the prefecture of Chania and is based in Elos. It is a coastal municipality, which according to the 2001 census, has a total of 1,443 inhabitants and an area of ​​136,716 acres. It includes the villages of Amygdalokefali, Vathi, Vlatos, Elos, Kampos, Perivolia, Strovles and Kefali. It is a unique puzzle of natural beauties of 137 thousand acres, where 90% of the mountainous element prevails, while the beautiful beaches that remain unforgettable to every visitor stand out. The economy of the region is based on the primary production sector. 69% of the economically active population is employed in agriculture, livestock and fisheries. The predominant product is olive oil and there is a large production of chestnuts, dairy products, meat, wine, honey, fruits and vegetables, figs, nuts, fruits and vegetables. The Municipal Unit consists of very special and picturesque settlements. The traditional element is strong in the beautiful neighborhoods of the settlements and blends harmoniously with the modern interventions that one encounters, mainly in the coastal areas. The residents are friendly, pleasant people and generously offer their hospitality to the guests. The fauna of the area is of amazing wealth. Among other things, there are protected endemic species found in a few areas of Crete, Greece and Europe, such as the famous Cretan vulture (known as the bone), but also a rare species of hawk the “barb” (falco eleononae), which the 35% of the population pan-European, lives in the mountains of Crete. Also, in the mountains of the Municipal unit is raised a large number of free sheep and goats, which are an important resource of the inhabitants, but also play a very important role in the survival of the vulture.

In Perivolia, you will walk on the traditional bridges and cobbled alleys and visit the ancient tombs. In Amygdalokefali, there is also the cave of Agios Mama and in Vathi, the catholic church of Santa Maria. The route to Chrysoskalitissa is accompanied by small, picturesque coves. The liquid element has a special place in the character of the area. Blue beaches with crystal clear waters, remain unforgettable to every visitor. Some have an exotic appearance with iridescent pink sand and turquoise waters (Elafonisi which is one of the most popular destinations, as it has one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece), while others have more green, steep cliffs and clear blue waters. The water, a source of life and development, gushes pure from the innumerable springs of the mountain mass, quenching the thirst of the villages and the crops and giving fertile land and rich vegetation, such as the chestnut forests, in the mountains of the Municipal unit. Besides, the wider area is of special environmental interest and for this reason, it has been characterized as 2/3 of it as a “NATURA” area, while at the same time two “LIFE” programs are being implemented. Finally, it is worth mentioning some of the many monuments of historical and architectural heritage of the area, such as the 15 Byzantine frescoed churches of the 12th, 13th and 14th century, the scattered remains of the ancient city Inachorion on the outskirts of the Municipal District of Vathi, but also the chimneys of the houses in the picturesque settlements of the Municipality, which are samples of our newest architectural heritage. Amygdalokefali Amygdalokefali is located in the west of Kissamos province at the foot of Mount Koutroulis, at an altitude of 460 meters from the sea and at a distance of 26 km from Kastelli Kissamos and 68 km from Chania. It is the seat of the Community which includes two more villages, Livadia and Keramoti. The villagers are engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry, fishing and beekeeping. Mountaineering trails: Amygdalokefali – Kefali with a length of 4 km Amygdalokefali – Keramoti – Kampos with a length of 6 km. Sights: The traditional village of Agios Myronas, the caves of Agios Mamas and Agios Myronas. The route from the village to the beach, where there is a fishing shelter, is also very interesting. Cultural events: The religious holidays of Agios Mamas on September 2, Astratigos on November 8 and Agios Panteleimon on July 27. Tourist infrastructure: For accommodation there are three guesthouses (Rooms for rent) with a total capacity of 10 people, there is also a restaurant, grocery store and of course the traditional cafes. Elos Elos is 24 km from Kastelli Kissamos and 57 km from Chania. Turn south at Kaloudiana at the 39th kilometer from Chania, on the road Chania – Kasteli. Elos is one of the most beautiful traditional villages of Kissamos province.
