Geography
The Municipal unit is crossed by the gorge of rare natural beauty of Agia Irini, which starts from the homonymous village and ends at the sea (crossed with 2-3 hours of hiking). In the village of Agia Irini, which borders the western section of Mousouron, one can try the excellent mournidia, ie tsikoudia distilled from berries. At the exit of the gorge in the Libyan Sea, is the seaside settlement of Sougia with a long beach, which presents significant tourist traffic in the summer months, with several rooms, taverns and cafes. Another gorge at the borders of the D. section is that of Tripiti, which, however, is inaccessible to non-specialists. At the borders of the municipality, are the ancient cities of Elyros (near Rodovani, it reached great prosperity and today ruins are preserved), Syia (in Sougia, port of Elyros), Lissos (west of Sougia, also the port of Elyros, is preserved Asclepieion and church of Agios Kyrikos), Vienna (east of Sougia) and Yrtakina (near Temenia, cyclopean walls survive). In Temenia there are thermal springs, from which the homonymous soft drinks are produced. Glorious is the history of the villages of the region during the years of Venetian rule, Ottoman rule and German occupation. The visitor can also see a large number of frescoed Byzantine churches, such as Agios Onoufrios in Kampanos or Agia Irini in Sougia. The biggest festival in the area takes place on August 24, at Agios Eftychis in Tsiskiana, patron saint of the entire province of Selino, which gathers a large crowd. The main products of the place are the wonderful oil, as evidenced by the mantinada “Kissamos with your vines, Celery with your olives …”, the livestock products, the honey, the tsikoudia etc. In addition, ores have been discovered in the area, but their exploitation efforts have not borne fruit.
