One of the most important monuments of historical importance in western Crete is the cemetery of Maleme. Maleme was the first place that the occupiers wanted to occupy during World War II because of the airport located there. The battle of March 20 is known as the battle of Crete, in which virtually the whole island fell into the hands of the Germans.

At this point of the Battle, the German Ministry of Culture has built the German Cemetery where the Germans who fell in the war during 1941-1945 rest.
