In the northeastern part of the prefecture of Chania extends the multifaceted complex of villages of Apokoronas. The area rich in water and rainfall favors the cultivation of the land as well as livestock and therefore the majority of the inhabitants are farmers and stockbreeders, but the area does not lack the tourist development that in recent decades has affected the entire prefecture of Chania.
The natural landscape of Apokoronas is green while one can enjoy in its tours picturesque plateaus, the wild White Mountains and the endless beach of Georgioupolis. A place worth visiting is also the lake of Kournas, the only natural lake in Crete.
