Churches and monasteries in Akrotiri, Chania
Holy Monastery of Agia Triados-Tsagarolon (16th century): It is the largest monastery in Crete, worthy of admiration due to its architectural beauty and is located in the center of Akrotiri. Quite “distressed” due to the constant looting and arson.
Holy Monastery of Gouvernetou (15th): It is located in the northern part of the cape and is rich in external beauty, in contrast to its very meager interior. This is because it suffered from the pirates, with the result that the monks abandoned it and took with them sacred books and utensils. Books of the monastery have been found on Mount Athos and Patmos.
The katholikon: It was built in the 6th – 10th century and is the oldest monastery in Crete.
Also in Akrotiri are housed the monasteries: Monastery of Agios Ioannis of Eleimon (17th century), Female Monastery of Agios Ioannis in Korakies (17th century), Metochi of Agios Antonios and cave temple of Arkoudiotissa next to the Monastery of Gouvernetos of Aglaidos, Spilaidos ) in the settlement of Pazinos in the gorge of Mavre, Monastery of the prophet Elias (in the tombs of Venizelos). It is no coincidence that Akrotiri is also characterized as Mount Athos of Crete.
