The martyr village of Kantanos

The village of Kantanos is located in the center of the province of Selinos and is the historical seat of the municipality of Kantanos – Selinos. It takes its name from the ancient word “Kantania” which means “city of victory”. A village whose main occupation is livestock and agriculture. Its main product was and is olive oil, which is why many of its olive trees are huge and age-old.

Kantanos is a martyr village which suffered a lot in the Second World War from the Germans and despite the great resistance of the villagers, it was leveled and destroyed on June 3, 1941. On that day the Germans wrote an inscription that said “here was Kantanos, destroyed in order to avenge the murder of 25 German soldiers ”. It was the first village in Europe to be completely destroyed. The Nazis claimed that it was the village that resisted the most. It is one of the reasons that the Germans left behind 3 inscriptions – historical monuments.

The modern Kantanos has 1000 inhabitants and is engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry and there are various services such as health center, town hall, police and fire department. At the educational level there is elementary, high school and EPAL. but also restaurants such as restaurants and two hotels.
