Wedding in Chania, General Information
Issuance of a Marriage Certificate

The competent Service for the issuance of a Marriage Certificate is the relevant Municipality or community.

Necessary supporting documents:

1. Application – Responsible statement
2. Police ID of both
3. For a religious wedding, a certificate of the church considered by the Diocese
4. For a civil marriage statement of the mayor or president of the Community for the performance of a civil marriage
5. Residence permit for foreigners

Execution time

The declaration must be made within 40 days after the date of the wedding. If the declaration is made within three months after the lapse of 40 days, a 4.40 euro stamp is affixed. After the expiration of this deadline (40 days + 3 months) a stamp of 13.5 euros is affixed.

Marriage Declaration in the Municipal Registers

The competent service for the Marriage Declaration in the Municipal Registers is the relevant Municipality or Community.

Necessary supporting documents

1. Application – Responsible statement issued by the Service or the KEP
2. Police ID
3. Marriage Certificate

You do not need to spend anything for the above procedure.

Issuance of a Copy of Marriage Certificate

The issuance of a Copy of the Marriage Certificate is made by the relevant Municipality or Community or through the KEP.

Necessary supporting documents

1. Application – Responsible Statement given by the Service or the KEP
2. Demonstration of two police IDs

The cost for the issuance of a Copy of Marriage Certificate is zero.

Issuance of a Certificate of Non-dissolution of the Marriage

The issuance of a Certificate of Non-dissolution of the Marriage is done by the relevant Court of First Instance or through KEP

Necessary supporting documents

1. Certificate of marital status
2. Certificate of close relatives (or affidavit from the Magistrates’ Court) in case of death
3. Responsible Statement of Law 1599/86 where it is stated that: “my marriage that took place on ………… has not been dissolved. with ………… .. a) until the day of his / her death which occurred on ……… .. b) until today. ”

The above procedure will cost you 1 euro

Opening a family portion due to marriage

The competent department for opening a family portion is the relevant Municipality or Community. The process is also carried out through KEP.

Necessary supporting documents

1. Application – Responsible Statement issued by the competent Service or the KEP. The Responsible Statement must read: “On my own responsibility and knowing the sanctions provided by the provisions of par. 6 of article 22 of Law 1599/1986, I declare that I have not opened a family portion in another Municipality.”
2. Police ID
3. Authorization if the person directly concerned cannot attend
4. Copies of tax returns of two people
5. Copy of PPC / OTE account
6. Birth certificate
7. Marriage Certificate
8. Birth Certificate

You will not have to pay anything to open a family portion.
